Tolerate your emotions

Many psychological problems occur due to an intolernace of emotions - particularly negative ones. When we feel distress this should be an opportunity to learn what is causing it, how bad it really is, and work out ways to overcome it. However, the most common response is to get rid of it immediately. These methods are normally unhelpful - escape, seeking reassurance from others, alcohol, binge eating, drugs - and maintain the problem as you are preventing the learning opportunity to see that you can cope.

By teaching children to tolerate and regulate their emotions, I believe we can reduce the amount of psychological problems experienced in the future. It is not the whole answer, but would go a long way to help.

What do you think?
